Consistent Launch Crash

Hello Support Team,

I am experiencing a consistent crash upon launching the game: The game's logo displays and then the error occurs.

As per a suggestion I read elsewhere on the bugtracker, I have attempted running the game without having my USB-attached sound device connected. It has made no difference.

Specs:

  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
  • Memory: 4096MB RAM
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 CPU, M 430 @ 2.27GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
  • GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

I'm sadly unable to provide my game's exact build as its stated in the game's main menu and the crash occurs before that, but I can at least say that its whatever Steam has available for download as per 25 December 2015. :)

Please find the log included here: error.log

Thanks for any assistance or commentary you can provide.

Glad to hear it's working, AV can be mysterious at times.Let us know if you have any further issues

Thanks!  I got it working!

Turns out it was Avast Antivirus.  Once I uninstalled Avast it started working. Even after I reinstalled Avast it continued working.  I have Avast on my Laptop too, but that didn't cause a problem.  I put it down to the OS maybe.  My Laptop has W10, but my Desktop has W7.  So a combination of W7, Avast and WFTO can cause it to fail at first.  Very strange.

In that case could you please uninstall and reinstall the game. While doing so could you ensure that all AV software is disabled so that we can rule its interference out?

You could also try and run the Windows system file checker referenced by then last user that had this issue.

This can be achieved by running '/sfc scannow' in an admin CMD window.

Ah-haaaah!  I see what's going on here!  Sorry about that...  In an attempt to troubleshoot/fix WFTO on my desktop PC I copied my working Laptop's installation to my desktop PC.  That's how the output_log will have gotten in there.

Unfortunately this means that WFTO cannot get far enough to even generate an output_log on my desktop.

In that case you have sent me the log from the laptop. You can see the 920m listed on line 5 of the listed log. Can I get the log from the machine that isn't working from a session where it fails the launch?

Hey Mike,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I've just had a closer look at your GPU and it looks like it falls far below minimum spec. As you can see here https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+920M&id=3192 your GPU scores on average 726 points on the PassMark benchmark.

Unfortunately War For the Overworld requires a minimum score of 1500 on the PassMark benchmark to run the game, as stated in our System Requirements. There's nothing we can really do to fix it other than recommending that you attempt to run on your alternative machine.

What are the specs of the Laptop that is able to run the game?

I wouldn't be so hasty with declining this issue if I were you, because I'm afraid you are incorrect....

As I stated above, My Desktop PC has a GeForce GTX 1070, which scores 11,091 points on the PassMark benchmark.  It is a fairly new card and can run much more demanding games than WFTO.

The GeForce 920m is the card in my Laptop, which not only runs WFTO just fine, but can even handle it in Ultra Graphics.

Thanks for your reply,

Yeah I already visited the Startup Crashes page before I posted here. My .Net is up to date, No USB audio devices(except for my Laptop which WFTO actually works on), doesn't even make it to a Black Screen and I don't use AVG.

My Anti-Malware software is the same across both computers and they are Avast Free Anti-Virus, CCleaner, Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and ZoneAlarm Security.  Again with all of these installed on both computers, WFTO still works fine on my Laptop.

Hey Mike,

Can you shoot over your unity output_log? It's in the default location.

We have a crash guide here with troubleshooting steps that your should follow: Startup Crashes

Let us know if any of the above correct it. Many AV programs have historically triggered issues.

Sort the above and we should be able to get you up and running.

Hello,

Wow, 2 years ago this problem was happening... and now its 2018, I've just bought this game and now I am having the same issue on my Desktop PC, but not my Laptop.  Unfortunately none of the above info in the thread helps.

On my Windows 7 Desktop PC, I have the crash happening consistently just after the splash screen. It says that WTFOGame.exe has stopped working.  The problem details are:

Other notes:

My Laptop is an ASUS VivoBook Max X541UJ-GQ255T 15.6" Notebook i5 8GB 1TB 920M Upgraded with Windows 10 Pro.  And War for the Overworld works.  Well it at least loads up to the menu which is a damn site more than my desktop.  I haven't tried playing it yet.  Just wanted to get this report out there before any of that.

I tried updating my graphics drivers too. I can't see how it can be a Unity thing either, because other Unity games work on my Desktop PC, including my own as I am a Unity Developer myself :).

Though one thing I should mention is that I have an extra wide monitor. Aspect Ratio is 21:9.

My Desktop Resolution is 2560x1080.  I don't know if you've covered that?  Some old games crash in a similar way or just don't display anything at all if I don't do some hacking, especially if I have the monitors software installed... Which I haven't for that exact reason.

Anyway, if you can help out that would be great.  It would suck if I can only play it on my Laptop. :P

Cheers.

Mike
