Consistent Launch Crash

Icey 3 years ago • updated by Cian Noonan (QA Wizard) 9 months ago 37

Hello Support Team,

I am experiencing a consistent crash upon launching the game: The game's logo displays and then the error occurs.

As per a suggestion I read elsewhere on the bugtracker, I have attempted running the game without having my USB-attached sound device connected. It has made no difference.

Specs:

  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
  • Memory: 4096MB RAM
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 CPU, M 430 @ 2.27GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
  • GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

I'm sadly unable to provide my game's exact build as its stated in the game's main menu and the crash occurs before that, but I can at least say that its whatever Steam has available for download as per 25 December 2015. :)

Please find the log included here: error.log

Thanks for any assistance or commentary you can provide.

Greetings.

I am sorry to hear about your issue.

You would help us to find the cause more quickly if you share your output log.

It can be found here

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\War For The Overworld\WFTOGame_Data\output_log.txt

I am looking forward to find a solution as soon as possible.

Regards,

Marados

Thank you very much for your response!

Sadly, I cannot upload the requested file. It does not exist at the location provided or anywhere else on my system.

Kind regards

Hi Icey,

usually the game creates this log each time it starts. Even if it crashes during this we are often able to find indicators here.

I guess this bug could be deeper than I though so I am going to ask the coders for help. Anyway, this will take a few days.

Until then, I do have one last idea.

Please set the steam launch options (right-click the game in your steam library -> properties) of the game to

-force-opengl

and restart it.

This forces the game to run with OpenGl instead of DirectX. As both systems set apart in quite a few things there is a chance to solve your issue.

However, if this does not help, remove the launch options again, please.

Regards,

Marados

Hello Marados,

As per your suggestion I altered Steam's launch options to "-force-opengl" but this did not resolve the issue. The new launch options' error log created by the crash states that KERNELBASE.dll caused an Access Violation at "0033:fdc9bccd" instead of "0033:fdcabccd" and several other such differences. The significance of these are lost on me, but I've included the subtly different error log in case it helps: error.log.

The output log sadly remains absent from the directory, but the game does create and modify a launcher log which I will include: War for the Overworld Launcher Log.txt.

Thank you for your continued support and time.

Kind regards,

Icey

Hello Icey,
If no output_log.txt is created, this means the game does not even run at all.
So somehow Unity is crashing right before any of our own code.
So this is either a serious issue of the Unity engine or it might be a driver issue or antivirus software.
Do you use AVG Antivirus by any chance? AVG is known to see the WFTO executable as false positive and prevents it from starting. For some users this causes an Access Violation.
Do you have any other games based on Unity engine that work?

Cheers

Hello V0id,

Thank you for your response.

Based off of this list, other games using the Unity engine that I've ran on my machine are the following:

  • Anna
  • Endless Space
  • Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Out of these 3 games, only Endless Space saw serious playing but all of them ran without ever crashing.

I do not use AVG Antivirus.

My video drivers are up to date, but I'm presently uncertain about my sound drivers. I will look into that.

Kind regards,

Icey

According to the Launcher log the GPU can neither be identified as Intel, Nvidia nor AMD device.
I am still guessing it's an issue with the GPU (driver).
So the rig is a notebook? Does it have a switchable graphics solution (onboard Intel + dedicated AMD GPU)?
Can you try to force it to use your dedicated GPU?
See: https://forum.subterraneangames.com/threads/solution-for-ui-does-not-show-or-game-is-very-slow.8665/

Does it help?

Yes, the rig is a notebook (Acer Aspire 7745G) with a dedicated AMD GPU. However, opening up the Catalyst Control Center and selecting Power only shows the PowerPlay sub-menu in which I cannot make any adjustments.

Hrm, this usually means that you use a vendor (Acer) specific driver which has this option disabled.
Normally it selects the correct device automatically, however WftO is not in their list and it does often assign the onboard intel graphics to the game which can cause problems.
For some (rare) models it can be required to use the vendor driver but often it's not and the vendor drivers available are often outdated.
(I had my self an Acer Aspire and decided at some point to use the official generic AMD driver after Acer stopped updating it)
You could try to use the generic AMD driver instead, which might potentially instantly fix the issue but at least should give you the required option to force the dedicated GPU for WftO.

However before you try this, can you check if you can get the game started with this parameter:
-force-d3d9
It might help to make the game start, if it's running on the weak onboard intel GPU.
If the game starts with this option, do you get now an output_log.txt? Can you upload it so we can see which GPU was assigned?

Cheers

I ran the game using "-force-d3d9", which sadly resulted in the same crash and no output log being created.

I believe I am already using the generic AMD drivers, I have had to manually download them through AMD for some time. I could be mistaken in this regard.

Kind regards,

Icey

This sounds strange, then the option should be there indeed.
Can you try to create a desktop shortcut for the game (by right clicking on WftO in your games library).
Can you right click on the shortcut and use option "Run on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650" if any.
Otherwise can you right click on your desktop and select "Configure Switchable Graphics".
Find "WFTOGame.exe" in the "Recent Applications" list and click on "Power Saving" on the right side to toggle it to "High Performance".
Do any of those work either?
Otherwise I need to wonder why you don't have options to assign GPU on your system.

For the record, am I correct in my statement that I am using the generic AMD drivers when I download them from http://support.amd.com/en-us/download? Just making sure I'm not messing up here.

In response to your suggestions:
When I create a shortcut and then right click it, there is no "Run on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650" option or anything similar.

Right clicking on my desktop does not show me the option "Configure Switchable Graphics"

I took the liberty of browsing to the Power Options in the Control Panel, which are set to "High Performance" as the default option. Not sure if the settings there would matter.

Thanks for your continued support!

You're welcome! But I admit the issue seems harder to resolve than expected :)

Well it is important to note that the Switchable Graphics Driver is not the Catalyst Control Center and is a part ofthe normal ATI Radeon HD Display Driver.
So installing newest Catalyst Software Suite is not enough, you need to install the newest ATI Beta Driver (Radeon Software Crimson Edition Beta).
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/legacy?product=legacy3&os=Windows+7+-+64
It's also recommend to remove the old acer driver first. However checking "Remove anything AMD" during installation should do.
There is a FAQ for Mobile Drivers:
http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/LaptopsFAQ.aspx

And after doing bit of research I see Acer is not very nice when you try to install it.
So the custom installation fails on a regular basis, but it can be by-passed by changing a BIOS option (yikes)
http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/26985/~/can%E2%80%99t-update-graphics-driver-for-switchable-graphics

So I wonder how it simply worked when you installed it already?

However the above BIOS option should force the dedicated GPU for all applications, so if you are willing to touch it, then maybe try this first without installing anything, to check if forcing your ATI GPU fixes the issue for you at all.
If it does then it's up to you if you wanna change this just for playing the game or if you want to get the flexible assignment options by using the generic beta driver.

Switchable Graphics it self is a mess and Acer does add its own hurdles unfortunately :/
Quite some people had issues because the driver assigns wrong GPU to WftO, but if you not even have an option to assign the dedicated GPU manually with Acers driver it becomes way more cumbersome to fix.

I'm sorry for your inconvenience.

My apologies for not immediately jumping to install the Radeon Software Crimson Edition Beta, but it seemed like it could take some time and I needed my notebook at the time.

With all that said, I have now installed it... something which it automatically did in my native language. This might somewhat complicate communications on the matter. Communications which, of course, will remain necessary as the game continues to crash right after the logo splash for me.

I have checked up on my BIOS' Video Mode settings. These were already set to 'Discrete'. This could explain why there was no option on right clicking: There was nothing to choose other than the ATI GPU. :)

Sadly, this does not explain why no GPU is detected at all so that continues to be a problem.

Kind regards,

Icey

Hi Icey,

Our apologies for the continued issues you're having. I have one other quick step you could try:

Before you run the game from Steam, press and hold down left alt, and then click Play. Keep the alt key held down. If a small window doesn't pop up like below - eventually you should see the the WFTO icon flashing down in your taskbar. Click on it and you should see the window.

Try replicating the above settings to your window and hit Play.

Hey Scott,

Thank you for your response!

In an attempt to follow your instructions I opened my Steam library, selected War for the Overworld, pressed down the left alt key, clicked play while holding the alt key and then waited. The game displays the Splash Logo as normal (though it appears in the background now) and then crashes like it has been. I cannot access the displayed Configuration window this way.

Kind regards,

Icey

I would really like to get a gist why it does not even manage to load any basics before it crashes for you.
Seems it's really an hard to resolve problem which I do not understand yet.

It is an access violation in kernelbase.dll, so there is something going wrong deep in the operating system.
Thus the log does not tell us much for what we are looking and I am running out of ideas.
@Scott
Do you have any other idea?

Well this at least confirms that the issue isn't with our code nor is it with Icey's graphics drivers or GPU - It never gets that far into initialization.

Icey - Do you have any kind of anti-virus or security software installed at all? If so, could you try disabling it temporarily and trying to play the game?

I do not have any active anti-virus software installed.

I fear we do not know how to fix your very specific issue unfortunately.
If this is the only rig, you can use for playing the game, you might want to get a refund from Steam?
This should be possible as you didn't played the game yet (more than 2 hours).

Again sorry for all the troubles you got with this.

+1

In that case then, I would like to once more express my gratitude for all the suggestions you've offered and for the time/thought put into this issue. If nothing else, you've greatly helped me zero in on the core of the matter. :)

If you are no longer able to assist me with the problem then I will just have to make due myself. I will update this thread when possible if I do happen to find something that works for me that isn't just "I've acquired a new rig!" (Though you might see that line in a new thread because who knows what sort of trouble a new rig will bring along with it. ;D)

Though the suggestion does not come entirely as a surprise, applying for a refund is one thing I definitely will not do. When I purchased the game I was very excited to get under way with playing it and while the current situation is unfortunate, that desire has not diminished.

As such any further input that comes to mind will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Icey

You sound comes not from any USB device or does it?
You already confirmed you have no wireless USB headset but we just had a case where it was normal USB speakers.
What you can try is unplugging any USB audio device and start the game.

But I guess you have no USB audio device at all and your issue is different.
Just wanted to make sure it is not this issue for you.

Hey v0id,

My sound is usually routed through a uh... this USB device.

I'd seen that some issues have arisen for other users using a USB headset so I thought it prudent to run the game with my USB device disconnected prior to writing the initial post to this thread. I've also toyed with enabling and disabling the laptop's on board playback devices in the Control Panel, sadly to no avail. Please find a screenshot of my Playback settings included in this message, the active device is the one connected by USB.

Kind regards,

Icey

I guessed you might have already tried that however I just wanted to make sure you did.
In case you didn't try to completely unplug it, it would be worth to check.
However I think we are through all known crash issues and you suffer likely something we didn't encountered so far.

Hey guys!

After doing some research on the offending file, Kernelbase.dll, I ended up running Microsoft's integrated System File Checker, which detected Kernelbase.dll as being corrupted and remedied the problem. I'd never have guessed this could be a thing. D:

The game now runs as smoothly as can be desired and thus far I haven't encountered any issues with the game itself, nor do I expect to.

I want to thank you all very much for your time, suggestions and continued patience and leave you in the knowledge that I will be starting my campaign as the Underlord now!

Kind regards and a happy new year,

Icey

Have Fun Icey! :D

I'll take great pleasure in making this as fixed now since we've resolved it :)

Hello,

Wow, 2 years ago this problem was happening... and now its 2018, I've just bought this game and now I am having the same issue on my Desktop PC, but not my Laptop.  Unfortunately none of the above info in the thread helps.

On my Windows 7 Desktop PC, I have the crash happening consistently just after the splash screen. It says that WTFOGame.exe has stopped working.  The problem details are:

My Desktop Specs are:

MSI Z170A Gaming M5 Motherboard

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming 8GB

Crucial MX300 525GB 2.5in SSD

Corsair Dominator Platinum CMD16GX4M2B3000C15 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4

Windows 7 Ultimate Edition 64-bit

Other notes:

My Laptop is an ASUS VivoBook Max X541UJ-GQ255T 15.6" Notebook i5 8GB 1TB 920M Upgraded with Windows 10 Pro.  And War for the Overworld works.  Well it at least loads up to the menu which is a damn site more than my desktop.  I haven't tried playing it yet.  Just wanted to get this report out there before any of that.

I tried updating my graphics drivers too. I can't see how it can be a Unity thing either, because other Unity games work on my Desktop PC, including my own as I am a Unity Developer myself :).

Though one thing I should mention is that I have an extra wide monitor. Aspect Ratio is 21:9.

My Desktop Resolution is 2560x1080.  I don't know if you've covered that?  Some old games crash in a similar way or just don't display anything at all if I don't do some hacking, especially if I have the monitors software installed... Which I haven't for that exact reason.

Anyway, if you can help out that would be great.  It would suck if I can only play it on my Laptop. :P

Cheers.

Hey Mike,

Can you shoot over your unity output_log? It's in the default location.

We have a crash guide here with troubleshooting steps that your should follow: Startup Crashes

Let us know if any of the above correct it. Many AV programs have historically triggered issues.

Sort the above and we should be able to get you up and running.

Thanks for your reply,

Yeah I already visited the Startup Crashes page before I posted here. My .Net is up to date, No USB audio devices(except for my Laptop which WFTO actually works on), doesn't even make it to a Black Screen and I don't use AVG.

My Anti-Malware software is the same across both computers and they are Avast Free Anti-Virus, CCleaner, Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and ZoneAlarm Security.  Again with all of these installed on both computers, WFTO still works fine on my Laptop.

The output_log:

Strangely its looking for things on the D drive when I actually have WFTO installed on the E Drive.

Declined - Not Fixable

Hey Mike,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I've just had a closer look at your GPU and it looks like it falls far below minimum spec. As you can see here https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+920M&id=3192 your GPU scores on average 726 points on the PassMark benchmark.

Unfortunately War For the Overworld requires a minimum score of 1500 on the PassMark benchmark to run the game, as stated in our System Requirements. There's nothing we can really do to fix it other than recommending that you attempt to run on your alternative machine.

What are the specs of the Laptop that is able to run the game?

I wouldn't be so hasty with declining this issue if I were you, because I'm afraid you are incorrect....

As I stated above, My Desktop PC has a GeForce GTX 1070, which scores 11,091 points on the PassMark benchmark.  It is a fairly new card and can run much more demanding games than WFTO.

The GeForce 920m is the card in my Laptop, which not only runs WFTO just fine, but can even handle it in Ultra Graphics.

Pending Customer

In that case you have sent me the log from the laptop. You can see the 920m listed on line 5 of the listed log. Can I get the log from the machine that isn't working from a session where it fails the launch?

Ah-haaaah!  I see what's going on here!  Sorry about that...  In an attempt to troubleshoot/fix WFTO on my desktop PC I copied my working Laptop's installation to my desktop PC.  That's how the output_log will have gotten in there.

Unfortunately this means that WFTO cannot get far enough to even generate an output_log on my desktop.

In that case could you please uninstall and reinstall the game. While doing so could you ensure that all AV software is disabled so that we can rule its interference out?

You could also try and run the Windows system file checker referenced by then last user that had this issue.

This can be achieved by running '/sfc scannow' in an admin CMD window.

Thanks!  I got it working!

Turns out it was Avast Antivirus.  Once I uninstalled Avast it started working. Even after I reinstalled Avast it continued working.  I have Avast on my Laptop too, but that didn't cause a problem.  I put it down to the OS maybe.  My Laptop has W10, but my Desktop has W7.  So a combination of W7, Avast and WFTO can cause it to fail at first.  Very strange.

Completed

Glad to hear it's working, AV can be mysterious at times.Let us know if you have any further issues
